Elevator Install Process



Installation of Phoenix Modular Elevators is much simpler than a conventional stick-built elevator. With off-site construction of the hoistway and pre-installation of the elevator, the on-site installation typically takes just 3 days.

  General Contractor Elevator Contractor
Prior to Erection of Hoistway
  1. Dig and pour concrete pit for hoistway and install anchor bolts.  Pour concrete pad for modular machine room, if ordered. 
  2. Make proper rough opening at each landing.  Barricade each landing in accordance with OSHA standards. (retrofit projects only)
  3. Schedule crane and crane operator to erect hoistway. 
  4. Optional: If desired, install sump pump in hoistway pit.
  1. Drill hole, install jack and casing, fill space between jack and casing with gel or sand. (in-ground jack only)
Erection of Hoistway
  1. Rig hoistway, crane it into the pit and set.
  2. Set modular machine room on slab, if ordered.
  3. Install non-shrink grout underneath the tower and jack base plates
  1. Supervise erection, ensure hoistway is plumb and level, attach to anchor bolts
Prior to electrical and hydraulic hookups (can be done before or after hoistway erection)
  1. Install smoke detectors in hallways
  2. Install sprinkler systems in the hoistway if required by your local AHJ.
  3. Provide electrical stub-ups to machine room
  4. Install dedicated phone line to machine room.
For remote (not modular) machine rooms:
  1. Install 4 electrical disconnects in machine room (1 3-phase, 3 110 volt, 20 amp)
  2. Install light and GFCI outlet
  3. Install self-closing, self-locking door
  4. Provide climate control if needed.
  1. Obtain required permits
Electrical and Hydraulic hookups  
  1. Install the piping from the elevator jack(s) in the hoistway to the hydraulic power unit in the machine room.
  2. Install the wire way from the shaft to the machine room.
  3. Supply the required hydraulic oil, start-up the power unit and begin the adjusting of the elevator equipment.
  4. Tie in the dedicated phone line and program the auto-dialer.
  5. Connect the provided smoke/heat detector lines into the elevator controller.
  6. Install light bulbs in car, hoistway, and modular machine room, if ordered
  7. Once all the adjusting and connections have been made, perform a pre-inspection and prepare for the actual inspection.
Prior to Inspection
  1. Patch any holes from piping and electrical wiring in hoistway and machine room walls
  2. Vent hoistway to exterior if required by local AHJ.
  3. Ensure that electrical supply and phone line are live.
  1. Advise the General Contractor of any items he must complete prior to the inspection, such as proper lobby lighting, working smoke detectors, etc.
After installation, before occupancy
  1. Finish exterior as required.
  2. Tie in interior as required.
  3. Install flooring in elevator car as required.
  1. Teach the building owner emergency procedures, turn the elevator over to the building owner.
